JSC KZ OTsM is actively working on improving its environmental sustainability. We have improved our environmental performance through a number of important innovations. This has not only reduced our impact on the environment, but also improved working conditions and the sanitary health of our community.
- Water Conservation. At JSC KZ OTsM, no waste water is released into the environment. All industrial effluent and storm sewage is treated before being released. Some of the industrial effluent is recycled. After the introduction of our new environmental program, industrial effluent has been reduced by 50% over the last five years.
- Air Conservation. We continuously work to reduce emissions from our plant. Currently, we are rebuilding our powder-gas treatment equipment. Total pollutant emissions have been reduced by 24% since 1996.
- Waste treatment.JSC KZ OTsM has been one of the first enterprises in the Kirov region to obtain a license for the treatment of hazardous waste. Since 2003, copper containing slush has been sent to UMMC for treatment. Inspection of the manufacturing processes is carried out by an ecological laboratory. This laboratory was one of the first Russian laboratories – and the first in the Kirov region – to receive national accreditation by the Russian Federation Government. In 2003, its accreditation was extended to cover the testing of industrial waste, groundwater, surface sewage, and soils. In 2005 the accreditation was extended to include the monitoring of physical contamination of industrial sites, residential areas and public construction development sites. For the purpose of eco-analytical control improvement, the modern devices and equipment are regularly purchased for measurement and control of harmful substances in the environment.
In 2005, KZ OTsM was preparing for the certification of its environmental management system according to ISO 14001-2004. This was the next stage within the environmental sustainability program framework of UMMC. Implementing this environmental management system will improve the plants environmental performance. In combination with the quality management system, this will lead to greater efficiency of the company’s control system as a whole.
